The tradition of "xông đất" (or "xông nhà") is a beautiful cultural practice in Vietnam that has been followed for centuries. Our ancestors believed that if everything goes smoothly and successfully at the beginning of the year, it would ensure a year of good luck and success in all aspects of life.
According to popular belief, after the New Year's Eve, all misfortunes from the previous year are left behind, making room for new beginnings. The arrival of the New Year brings hopes for a smooth and prosperous year. Therefore, the first person to step into a home after the Lunar New Year is often referred to as the "person who opens the house" or "xông đất." This person is seen as the messenger who will unlock the door to wealth and bring good fortune and peace to the family.
For many, the belief in the significance of the first person to step into the house during the New Year is crucial. Selecting the right age for "xông đất" is carefully considered in many families. Some families are very cautious and deliberate in their choice, while others may opt for someone with a good personality or even choose to do it themselves.
From the perspective of feng shui, experts suggest that the person chosen for "xông đất" should have a zodiac and heavenly stem that align well with the year and should not clash with the family’s zodiac sign.
Feng shui expert Pham Cuong shared that, for the Lunar New Year of Ất Tỵ 2025, the best ages to "xông đất" or open the house are Canh Tuất (1970), Canh Ngọ (1990), and Canh Thìn (2000).
Additionally, other ages such as Bính Tuất (1946), Canh Dần (1950), Đinh Dậu (1957), Canh Tý (1960), Bính Ngọ (1966), Đinh Mùi (1967), Bính Thìn (1976), Ất Sửu (1985), Bính Dần (1986), Đinh Mão (1987), Bính Tý (1996), and Đinh Sửu (1997) are also considered favorable for the opening ceremony.
Feng shui expert Pham Cuong also emphasizes the importance of the health and character of the person chosen to perform "xông đất." They should be in good health, have a friendly and easygoing personality, be successful in their endeavors, and the family should not have any unresolved issues. Moreover, the person should not be in direct conflict with the family’s zodiac sign.
Pham Cuong adds: "In life, when we meet good friends, people who share our passions and values, we feel fortunate and happy. If you cannot find someone who aligns with the principles of yin and yang, you can invite such friends to your home during the New Year. These friends can act as benefactors, bringing safety, good fortune, and tranquility. It is this peace of mind during the New Year's Day that creates wonderful energy for the family to enjoy a prosperous, healthy, and financially successful year."
